Sharing the Load to Shed the Load

The aim is to educate and inform 11 LGAs about overweight and obesity solutions/projects that can be implemented without exhaustive financial costs to local government resources, whilst encouraging community engagement and leadership:

i)            1st phase - a healthy communities best practice forum for communities in the OROC region, presenting healthy weight initiatives which are successfully being delivered in rural and remote communities.
ii)            2nd phase - accompanying printed material will be published as a best practice guidebook for the featured models presented at the forum.

This regional strategy is a unique opportunity for Local Government to take the lead in addressing a growing health endemic at a local and regional level. This will also enable local government to make informed choices on healthy weight strategies that have demonstrated success and lead to the encouragement of community and social interaction.

It will also give regional stakeholders in local government, planning and health the opportunity to form relationships, network, mentor and support each other in an organised forum, which is not frequently offered to this region.

There are many and various healthy weight measures that are current rolled out across OROC communities by various health authorities, awareness organisations, state and federal governments. Activities and services in the OROC communities can be limited by distance, lack of participation, insufficient infrastructure/resources and cost effectiveness.
